Growing up, Mrs. Doubtfire was always on in my house. I thought Robin Williams dressing up like an old lady was hilarious. The antics and hijinks the kids went through to keep their secret had me captivated. It also didn’t hurt that I had a huge crush on Matthew Lawrence. The film is also filled with memorable quotes that I still say today. Then, as I matured, I started to appreciate the underlying message and emotional depth of the story, which has only made me an even bigger fan.

MRS. DOUBTFIRE THE MUSICAL

Adapting cherished movies into musicals poses its own set of challenges. For instance, how do you fill the shoes of a beloved figure like Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire? It seems impossible not to draw comparisons. However, Rob McClure’s performance as both Daniel Hillard and Mrs. Doubtfire defies expectations. While he may not possess the strongest singing voice, his acting skills and impression abilities are unparalleled. The seamless transition between characters is a testament to his talent, effortlessly embodying the demanding quick changes required of him.

Original Cast Member Aaron Kaburick has joined the tour as Daniel’s Cosmetician brother, Frank Hillard. The number in which he and his husband, Andre Mayhem (played by Nik Alexander), transform Daniel into Euphegenia Doubtfire was my favorite. it’s so catchy, but also hilarious.

The show does a great job of balancing the humor and heart by making the daughter more involved in her parent’s divorce than she’d like. Giselle Gutierrez shines as the eldest sibling, Lydia, tackling a challenging role with skill. Maggie Lakis is also impressive as Miranda Hillard, portraying the mother in a way that prevents her from being seen as the villain. Her performance is both nuanced and heart.

Truthfully, the only downside for me regarding the show is that I was hoping for more memorable music. Although I appreciated the makeover number, the other songs fell short for me. It’s unexpected, considering the same duo behind Something Rotten! was involved.

Mrs. Doubtfire is playing at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood California until June 30th before heading up to San Francisco! Make sure to get your tickets today!
