Prime Video’s latest series, My Lady Jane, offers a captivating twist on history. Adapted from the books by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows, the narrative delves into the life of Lady Jane Grey. For those unfamiliar with British Monarchy, Lady Jane Grey, the great-granddaughter of Henry VII and cousin of King Edward VI, was appointed as Queen following Edward’s demise. This decision sparked controversy and ultimately led to her tragic death just nine days later, as Bloody Mary, daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, ascended to the throne.

Yet, in the case of My Lady Jane, the narrative poses an intriguing premise: What if she never met her demise and individuals possessed the ability to transform into animals at their discretion? Add in colorblind casting, characters loosely inspired by historical figures, and captivating on-screen chemistry that sizzles, and you have a recipe for success!

MY LADY JANE SHINES!

I love historical drama, romance, fantasy you name it. So, My Lady Jane I knew would be right up my alley. The idea to take a lesser-known historical figure and turn their story on its head was brilliant. Emily Bader (Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin) is an American Actress tackling the British Monarch and she is fantastic! She is strong and smart, and her chemistry with Edward Bluemel is insane. Bluemel plays his brooding and tortured Lord Guildford Dudley perfectly and should be prepared to be the internet’s newest boyfriend.

When it comes to the story there is so much going on, but it never gets muddled. Seriously, how do you take so many of my favorite tropes and put them into one story so successfully? There is love at first sight, enemies to lovers, a relationship of convenience, and forbidden love?! It sounds like it could get messy, but somehow the series pulls it off flawlessly.

Then, to add even more layers because this isn’t just a romance, they toss in the Ethians. What are Ethians? Well, they are people who can change into animals at will. They are also persecuted by non-Ethians through fear and bigotry. So, Jane is not only fighting for her life but the lives of others.

My Lady Jane is captivating on a multitude of levels with a great cliffhanger to boot. Make sure to watch so we can get a season 2!
