Despite the episode title, much of Kaiju No. 8 Ep. 10 “Secret Revealed” is not actually about Kafka Hibino. Much of the episode is actually about his comrades fighting for their lives, and actually coming out on top. Really, it’s only when the situation escalates into something beyond everyone’s ability to combat is when the titular kaiju comes out, and the secret is out.

Kaiju No. 8 Ep. 10 “Secret Revealed”: The Good
Honestly, most people will be more focused on the action of Kaiju No. 8 Ep. 10 “Secret Revealed”. However, for me, the best part of this episode is the story. At first, the story (thanks to Naoya Matsumoto) makes you think that it’s going to be a one-man struggle of Hoshino vs. Kaiju No. 10. Then the episode pulls the rug out from under you, and makes you realize that it’s a team effort. It’s not just one man versus a kaiju. It’s the kaiju versus everyone in the team. Honestly, this doesn’t happen a lot in Shonen Jump anime, where it’s typically one hero doing all the work. Thus, it is quite refreshing to see that not being the case in this particular anime. Most of the time. It does mildly subvert that at the end of the episode, but overall, it’s still refreshing.
However, that’s not to scoff at the action though, because it is very good. It’s not only well-animated thanks to Production I.G, but it’s also quite fluid and sensible thanks to the same. The action not only flows well from one scene to the next, but it looks great as well. All those combined results in a very good-looking episode that keeps you riveted to your seat to boot.
Kaiju No. 8 Ep. 10 “Secret Revealed”: The Bad
Admittedly, that last bit with Kafka does subvert the overall message of the episode. Yeah, teamwork matters, but then it’s the one superpowered guy who saves the day in the end? It does result in somewhat contradictory messages, but fortunately, it’s only slightly…maybe.
However, some of you might be into more calm anime series. In which case, you might want to check out DDDD, Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF, and/or Astro Note. They’re quite relaxing anime series to groove to.
