The Targaryen saga will officially continue. HBO just renewed House of the Dragon for a third season. The renewal order comes ahead of the show’s highly anticipated season 2 premiere on June 16.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel, House of the Dragon explores a pivotal time for House Targaryen, 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Season 1 sets up events that divide House Targaryen and ultimately lead to civil war after King Viserys’ death. This split leads the characters (and fans) to align themselves with the late Viserys’ wife Alicent and her son Aegon, or Viserys’ daughter Rhaenyra and her husband Prince Daemon.

Francesca Orsi, EVP  of HBO Programming, said the series has “reached new heights” in season 2.

“We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season 2, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season 3,” said Orsi.

Season 2 of House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Matthew Needham, Sonoya Mizuno, Tom Glynn-Carney, Ewan Mitchell, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, and Jefferson Hall.

House of the Dragon returns Sunday, June 16 on HBO at 9pm EST/PST. You can also stream episodes on Max.
