It’s been two years since audiences have been able to catch up with Billy Butcher, Hughie Campbell, and the rest of the characters on The Boys. But on June 13, 2024, the gruesome and gritty superhero series returns to Prime Video with a three-episode premiere of the fourth season before the remaining five episodes are released on the streamer weekly. However, rather than celebrate the release week with exciting news, Eric Kripke has instead revealed that the satirical drama based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s acclaimed comic book series will end with the fifth season.
Through his personal X account, the showrunner posted the last page of the script for the season four finale titled “Assassination Run.” The dialogue and the stage directions were blacked out, but the message “See you for our final season, motherf**kers!” at the bottom of the page. The text accompanying the picture revealed that five seasons was always the plan for the series, but these intentions were kept under wraps until he “got the final OK from Vought” to share it. Finally, Kripke said that he is “thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax.”
We Gotta Go Now
In May 2024, it was revealed that The Boys was renewed for a fifth season. However, at the time of the announcement, it was not revealed that this would also be the final season. While speaking to Variety, Kripke shared that he has known that this would be the case since his team started writing season three. Then, it took some time to get Amazon to sign off on the decision. But everyone finally got on the same page about a year ago.
As of now, season 5 currently being written. Once the scripts are completed, the eight-episode season should shoot from November 2024 through mid-2025. And once that’s done, the story of Butcher and Homelander will come to a close. Although, just because the tale between the characters played by Karl Urban and Anthony Starr concludes doesn’t mean that all the stories from this universe have been told. Kripke shared that spinoffs such as Gen V, The Boys: Diabolical, and an untitled spinoff set in Mexico “can and should continue.” He even revealed that there is another spinoff in the works right now, but they’re “not ready to announce anything yet.”
As bittersweet as it is that The Boys is ending in the relatively near future, it’s good to know that the world it created will continue on to tell more wildly irreverent superhero stories. And we here at That Hashtag Show will surely keep our readers updated once we know more about the next chapters of this celebrated adaptation.
