Did you see Isn’t It Romantic when it came out in 2019? The rom-com movie took on the famous tropes and cliches of that genre. It starred Rebel Wilson. Now, New Line Cinema is heading back to that well with a take on horror tropes and cliches with Isn’t It Scary. Deadline was first to the news and are reporting that April Prosser has been tapped to write the script. Todd Garner will produce for Broken Road Productions alongside Gina Mathews and Grant Scharbo of Little Engine Entertainment. There aren’t any actors attached yet.
Isn’t It Romantic was a take on subverting the conventions of the rom-com genre and was a success based on its budget, capturing more than $48 million at the box office. The film centered on Natalie (Wilson), an Australian architect living in New York City who is cynical about love and romance. The story takes a fantastical turn when Natalie, after a bump on the head, finds herself trapped in a world that operates by the saccharine and idealized rules of a romantic comedy.
This “sequel” should take a similar approach, but with the rules and conventions of the horror genre.
April Prosser is best known for writing Look Both Ways for Netflix in August 2022. She’s got projects like The Rewind and The Art of French Kissing coming up. She’s worked all across the board for Sony, CBS Films, Lionsgate, and even in animation like Tom & Jerry.
