Black Butler -Public School Arc- Ep. 7 “His Butler, Final Match” gives us the final part of the most…unique cricket match in anime history. Mostly because it’s a match where our POV team is just barely skirting the edges of the rules of cricket. All without technically cheating too…most of the time.
Black Butler -Public School Arc- Ep. 7 “His Butler, Final Match”: Details
Black Butler -Public School Arc- Ep. 7 “His Butler, Final Match” is the seventh episode (you can read reviews of Ep. 1, Ep. 2, Ep. 3, Ep. 4, Ep. 5, and Ep. 6 here) of season 4 of the Black Butler anime series, immediately following the 2017 anime film Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the dark fantasy and even darker comedy (sometimes the other way around) manga of the same name by Yana Toboso (Disney Twisted-Wonderland). Normally, it’s A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, Lycoris Recoil, Solo Leveling) that’s the studio behind this anime. This time, though, the studio behind season 4 is CloverWorks (HoriMiya, My Dress-Up Darling, Spy x Family). Crunchyroll is licensing this anime for its global debut.
Alas, we have no idea just who is behind Black Butler -Public School Arc- Ep. 7 “His Butler, Final Match” specifically. As for the new season of the anime as a whole, Kenjirou Okada is still the director behind this newest season of the anime as a whole. Hiroyuki Yoshino is the writer, while Yumi Shimizu is responsible for character design. Ryo Kawasaki composes the music.
Speaking of music: the opening theme music for this anime as a whole is “Fanatic Parade – The Parade of Battlers” by otoha. Meanwhile, “Shokuzai” (Atonement) by SID is the ending theme music for the same.

Black Butler -Public School Arc- Ep. 7 “His Butler, Final Match”: The Good
Honestly, the story is still the best part about Black Butler, which includes Black Butler -Public School Arc- Ep. 7 “His Butler, Final Match”. All because of Yana Toboso. Her story (which the episode is incredibly faithful towards) is still top-notch, and it’s all because of the cricket match. Or rather, the utter insanity that is this cricket match between Sapphire Owl and Green Lion. It’s pretty clear that Toboso-sensei completely familiarized herself with the rules of cricket, and then proceeded to write a story in which Ciel just barely manages to skirt the rules without cheating…at least when he’s not outright cheating and not getting caught. Honestly, the layers of rules skirting here approaches levels of meta-comedy for cricket fans and even non-fans alike, resulting in one hell of a sports comedy story.
Of course though, what a story of an anime without the animation? Fortunately, CloverWorks delivers animation in spades. Or rather, in cricket bats. The animation quality of this episode is the usual feature-length anime film levels of quality that CloverWorks has aspired to for this entire season of the anime. When you see a cricket ball meteor down complete with reentry flames, you know that CloverWorks is pulling out all the stops for this episode.
Black Butler -Public School Arc- Ep. 7 “His Butler, Final Match”: The Bad
