Sony Pictures will soon bring a classic children’s book to life in a new way. The studio will premiere the first feature adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon this summer.
The Crockett Johnson book, originally published in 1955, follows a curious four-year-old named Harold who uses his purple crayon to create a world all his own, just by drawing. But the upcoming film adds a twist to the story: now, Harold is all grown up.

Here’s the official synopsis for Harold and the Purple Crayon:
Inside of his book, adventurous Harold (Zachary Levi) can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life—and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. When the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of Harold and his friends’ creativity to save both the real world and his own.
The film comes from director Carlos Saldanha, with a screenplay from David Guion and Michael Handelman.
In addition to Levi, the feature also stars Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds, Alfred Molina, and Zooey Deschanel.
Harold and the Purple Crayon premieres in theaters August 2. Until then, check back to THS for more updates.
