The film IF debuted to a lukewarm reception at the weekend box office but managed to take the number one spot beating out Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

IF’s Saga At The Box Office

This weekend was an ongoing drama over the box office of IF. Originally the movie was targeting a $38 million to $42 million opening, with Paramount firmly placing it at $40 million. Then its opening numbers did not look good and the estimates were adjusted to $31.5 million. However, a surge in ticket sales over Saturday and Sunday caused Paramount to (once again) adjust the estimates to $35 million. Which is ultimately where the movie landed as per Box Office Mojo.

Ultimately this placed the film in the first place spot. Still, with a production budget of $110 million and the looming threat of another family-friendly movie (and one with an established IP) in Garfield. The movie may not make back its money.

Rounding Out The Top 5

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dropped 55.5% to $26 million, placing it in second. The movie has been the only summer blockbuster to exceed expectations with the film now making $100 million domestically in its first 10 days of release.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 debuted in the third-place spot. The movie earned $12 million. This isn’t a lot but bear in mind, that this did make more than 2018’s The Strangers: Prey at Night which debuted at $10.8 million. With a production budget of $8.5 million, the movie is a rare case of a movie being profitable at the box office these days.

The Fall Guy went from second place last weekend to fourth this weekend making $8.45 million. Challengers rounded out the top five with $2.9 million.

Next Weekend

Next weekend sees the release of both Furiosa and The Garfield Movie.

Both are looking to gain significant traction at the box office. The Garfield Movie is aiming for a $50 million to $65 million opening. Whereas Furiosa is tracking for a $40 million opening.

This tracking makes sense as The Garfield Movie generally is more geared towards families, children, older adults, and a broader audience than Furiosa. Still, as we saw this past weekend with IF, tracking doesn’t mean much of anything. It’ll undoubtedly be a close race but if last year’s Memorial Day weekend is any indicator with The Little Mermaid beating out the likes of Fast X And Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3; I wouldn’t be too surprised if the family-friendly fare wins out in the end.

As always we’ll find out next week!
