The character Caine, played by Donnie Yen, from John Wick: Chapter 4 was wildly popular. What’s not to like about a blind badass going toe to toe with John Wick and the full might of the High Table. That character is getting a new spinoff from the writer of The Umbrella Academy. The new film doesn’t have many details available, but it’ll focus on Caine’s story following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4. After winning his freedom from the High Table, there’s sure to be business that he needs to get done.
Robert Askins, who’s written for The Umbrella Academy, The Son, and won a Tony Award for his play Hand To God is writing the screenplay. The movie doesn’t have a title yet, but should start filming in Hong Kong next year. The movie comes from Chad Stahelski’s development deal that he signed with Lionsgate to oversee the action franchise. Stahelski will produce through his company 87Eleven Entertainment alongside Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.
Here’s what Donnie Yen had to say about working on John Wick: Chapter 4.
“Working on ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ was an extraordinary experience. The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil, and Erica push themselves to create action, fights, and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story, and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”
Lionsgate Chair of Motion Picture Picture Group Adam Fogelson had this to say in a statement.
“From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an indelible mark and had fans asking for more. The ‘John Wick’ universe that Chad, Basil, Erica, and Keanu have built offers a tapestry of fascinating characters brought to life by the most extraordinary performers, and we’re excited to have one of the world’s biggest superstars on board to continue this journey.”
