During Prime Video’s inaugural Upfronts presentation, Amazon Studios revealed a look at its upcoming film and TV projects. Among the highlights? Confirmation that the studio plans to move forward with a Tomb Raider TV series.
Last year, Amazon revealed plans to team with Phoebe Waller-Bridge to adapt the video game. At the Upfronts, Prime Video confirmed the project has officially received a series order.
“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all,” Waller-Bridge said.
Unfortunately, for now the series greenlight remains all the details we have about the show. We don’t know about the plot, and no casting details were revealed during the announcement.
Jen Salke, head of Amazon Studios, described the project as “epic” and “globe-trotting” at the Upfronts. We also know from the initial announcement last year that Amazon hopes to create a “Marvel-like franchise” for Tomb Raider, with interconnected properties across film, television, and games.
Waller-Bridge previously worked with Prime Video on her Emmy Award-winning series Fleabag. Her other writing credits include Killing Eve, Run, and the James Bond film No Time To Die.
The Prime Video Upfronts also offered updates on a number of other buzzy projects, including plans for a Nic Cage live-action Spider-Noir series; an early season 5 renewal for The Boys; and a new look at season 2 of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
