Marvel Studios Spider-Man 4 has found or is in the process of finding a new director to replace series steward, Jon Watts. One of the rumored contenders comes from another massive franchise in Fast & Furious. After the events and massive box office draw of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the partnership between Marvel and Sony on the films is at a crossroads. One side, Marvel, wants a smaller scale story, while Sony wants to bring back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield for another multiversal story. Both sides can’t agree on where to go with the story.
According to Jeff Sneider, who has a somewhat decent track record, the rumored choice for director is Justin Lin. Although he’s one of the favorite choices right now, that could change at a moment’s notice. He’s also reporting that Spider-Man 4 should begin filming in September or October 2024. That filming schedule has made it difficult for not only Marvel and Sony, but also for HBO. They’ve wanted Zendaya to do a season three of their hit show Euphoria, but this schedule makes that difficult. She’s locked in to reprise her role as MJ in the upcoming fourth film.
Lin has directed five films in the Fast & Furious franchise, and was even set for the tenth film, before alleged disagreements with Vin Diesel led to him being replaced. He also took over directing the Star Trek films from JJ Abrams with Star Trek: Beyond, so he’s no stranger to big budget affair. He’s got plenty of experience adapting popular material and taking over in blockbuster franchises.
With anything that doesn’t come from a more verifiable source, its best to take it as a rumor until we know more.
No Way Home ended with Peter Parker living alone in a small apartment, much of New York viewing Spider-Man as a menace, and everyone forgetting Peter Parker existed, including MJ and his best friend Ned. Depending on where they go with the story, the director might need to adapt to a more street-level story or a bigger multiversal one.
We’ll have to see when we get more news about Spider-Man 4.
