So, what films is the Festival showing? Let’s talk about it!
Friday, March 29 – SINISTER, HALFWAY TO HALLOWEEN FILM FESTIVAL
So, fun fact. According to Forbes, a scientific study was done, and Sinister is the scariest movie of all time. So, is there a better movie to kick off the first-ever Halfway to Halloween Film Festival?
Sinister is a horror film directed by Scott Derrickson (who also directed The Black Phone). The story follows true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt, played by Ethan Hawke, who moves his family into a new home. There he discovers a box of home movies depicting grisly murders. Then, as he delves deeper into the mystery behind these films, he uncovers a malevolent supernatural entity known as Bughuul. It turns out that Bughuul is linked to the deaths depicted in the videos. So, as Ellison becomes increasingly obsessed with the case, he puts his family in danger and unravels a terrifying truth about the sinister force haunting their lives.
Saturday, March 30 – The Purge, HALFWAY TO HALLOWEEN FILM FESTIVAL
The one that started it all. The Purge is a dystopian horror film written/directed by James DeMonaco. Fun Fact: DeMonaco has written the entire The Purge franchise, as well as directed the first three films.
So, the story is set in a future America where, for one night each year, all crime, including murder, is legal for 12 hours. The film follows the Sandin family, who barricade themselves inside their home during the annual Purge night to protect themselves from the chaos outside. However, when their son lets in a stranger seeking refuge, the family’s safety is compromised, and they must fight to survive the night as they face threats from both inside and outside their home.
Sunday, March 31 – Ouija: Origin of Evil, HALFWAY TO HALLOWEEN FILM FESTIVAL
So, Ouija: Origin of Evil is a supernatural horror film directed by Mike Flanagan. Mike Flanagan has directed some of my favorite horror films and TV shows such as Hush, Oculus, and The Haunting of Hill House.
So, the story for Ouija: Origin of Evil is set in 1967 Los Angeles and follows a widowed mother, Alice Zander, and her two daughters, Paulina and Doris. To make ends meet, Alice conducts seances to communicate with the deceased. When Alice incorporates a new prop, an Ouija board, into her seances, she unwittingly invites a malevolent spirit into their home. So, as Doris becomes increasingly possessed by the entity, the family must confront the dark forces at play. They must uncover the truth behind the Ouija board’s origins before it’s too late.
Monday, April 1 – Insidious (13th anniversary of the movie’s opening)
Is there a better way to celebrate Insidious‘ 13th Anniversary than at the Halfway to Halloween Film Festival?! This is one of my favorite horror films of all time.
So, Insidious is a supernatural horror film directed by the icon, James Wan. The story follows Josh and Renai Lambert, a couple who move into a new home with their three children. Shortly after moving in unexplained events begin to occur, leading to their son Dalton falling into a mysterious coma. So, as the family tries to uncover the cause of Dalton’s condition, they realize that their house is haunted by malevolent spirits.
Seeking help, they enlist the aid of a psychic and a team of paranormal investigators who reveal that Dalton’s coma is not medical but rather a result of his ability to astral project, leaving his physical body vulnerable to demonic entities. So, now the family must confront their fears and delve into the supernatural realm to save Dalton and protect themselves from the dark forces that threaten their lives.
Tuesday, April 2 – The Invisible Man, HALFWAY TO HALLOWEEN FILM FESTIVAL
Closing out the Halfway to Halloween Film Festiva is the remake of The Invisible Man. The Invisible Man is a science fiction horror film directed by Leigh Whannell. The story follows Cecilia Kass, played by Elisabeth Moss, who escapes from her abusive and controlling boyfriend, Adrian Griffin, a wealthy and brilliant scientist. After Adrian’s apparent suicide, Cecilia begins to experience a series of strange and terrifying events that lead her to believe that Adrian is not dead but has found a way to become invisible. As Cecilia tries to prove her sanity and expose Adrian’s true nature, she becomes entangled in a dangerous game of cat and mouse where her life is at stake.
