It’s been three long years since we got the magic of the Fear Street trilogy on Netflix in 2021. The Leigh Janiak-directed trilogy captured the hearts and attention of horror fans for quite a long time. Since then, people have been clamoring for Netflix to release anything about a new movie in the series. Now, thanks to our friends at Bloody Disgusting, we have that news. The new Fear Street film will be based on the book Fear Street: The Prom Queen from 1992.
To start off, Matt Palmer will direct the film. He’s known for Calibre, which also premiered on Netflix, in 2018. Joining him will be an ensemble cast featuring India Fowler (The Nevers, Insomnia), Suzanna Son (Red Rocket, The Idol), Fina Strazza (Paper Girls, Above the Shadows), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty, Cinnamon), Ella Rubin (The Idea of You), Chris Klein (Sweet Magnolias, American Pie), with Lili Taylor (Outer Range, Manhunt) and Katherine Waterston (The End We Start From, Perry Mason).
If you’ve never read Prom Queen, here’s a synopsis.
“Welcome back to Shadyside. In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider is unexpectedly nominated to the court, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.”
Matt Palmer & Donald McLeary wrote the script for this brand new Fear Street movie. Producers for the film include Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kori Adelson for Chernin Entertainment, with executive producers including Yvonne Bernard, Joan Waricha, and Jane Stine. Caroline Pitofsky will be overseeing production for Chernin Entertainment.
The original trilogy for Fear Street: Part 1: 1994, Part 2: 1978, and Part 3: 1666 showed off just what Netflix was capable of when they put their full attention into a horror series. All three parts stayed in their Top 10 for 12 collective weeks. It was a magic time when the entire horror community was waiting each week with bated breath for the next installment to arrive. We’ll have to see if they can recapture the magic with this upcoming film.
Fear Street: Prom Queen has no release date currently.
