As this year’s SXSW Festival comes to a close, one movie hopes to put a little lingering fear in the hearts of Austin residents. The creepy masked characters of The Strangers were spotted out and about at some of the city’s major haunts.
The Strangers stopped by several Austin hotspots, including the “Greetings from Austin” mural, The Glass Coffin, The Museum of the Weird, and The Driskill, as part of a promotion for The Strangers: Chapter 1.
The upcoming horror film is the third in The Strangers franchise, but it will actually kick off a new trilogy. In the film, a young couple are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin after their car breaks down in an eerie small town. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 stars Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath. It comes from director Renny Harlin, from a script by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland.
The original 2008 film The Strangers starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as the targets of masked killers during a home invasion. The second film, The Strangers: Prey at Night, released a decade later.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 will premiere in theaters May 17.
