Kung Fu Panda 4 managed to nearly double its projected amounts, whilst Dune: Part Two remained in strong standing at the box office.

Kung Fu At The Box Office

Kung Fu Panda 4

As per Box Office Mojo, Kung Fu Panda 4 took the top spot this past weekend. The movie brought in $58.3 million. This is impressive enough on an $85 million budget. Furthermore, it’s impressive as the movie was only projected to bring in $30 to $34 million. This means the movie brought in nearly twice as much, and almost entirely in walk-ins. Which is to mean, people who haven’t pre-purchased a ticket and simply buying a ticket that day. This is Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s highest-earning release at the box office since How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World, which was released in 2019.

It’s worth bearing in mind that it’s practically the only new release geared toward families and young children. This makes it an easy focus for that demographic as they look for something to watch. It’ll likely remain in this spotlight until Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which also seems to be attracting a younger demographic.

Dune: Part Two Still Dominates

Dune: Part Two

While the children and families went to see Kung Fu Panda 4, the teens and adults went to see Dune: Part Two at the box office. Which surprisingly fell to second place but still brought in a respectable $46 million. The movie is closing in on $370 million worldwide. It will likely eclipse the first film’s initial run of $402 million by next weekend, with a February re-release, the first film did earn an additional $31 million but the second film still has managed to show it will have staying power.

Still, movie theatres and film studios must be happy, as between the two films, the box office jumped up a resounding 13% over last year.

Imaginary and Cabrini were the other new releases and debuted in third and fourth place with $10 million and $7.5 million respectively. Bob Marley: One Love fell from second place to fifth and brought in $4 million in the fifth place spot.

Next Weekend’s Box Office Predictions

Next weekend sees the release of Arthur the King. The dog-centric family film is looking to bring in $12 to $17 million next weekend. Which is unlikely to dampen the success of Kung Fu Panda 4 by much. The film will likely debut in third place. I predict that Kung Fu Panda 4 will remain in first place and Dune: Part Two will remain in second place.

As always we’ll find out next week!
