DreamWorks Animation will bring Peter Brown’s award-winning bestseller The Wild Robot to life soon. The epic adventure follows the journey of ROZZUM (Roz for short), a robot shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. As Roz adapts to the harsh surroundings, the robot gradually builds relationships with the animals on the island, even becoming an adoptive parent to an orphaned gosling.
Based on this description and the first look at the film in the trailer, this one looks like it’s going to leave many a teary-eyed audience member. Check out the trailer for The Wild Robot for yourself below.
Though you wouldn’t know it from this first trailer – which has almost no dialogue – The Wild Robot boasts an impressive, award-winning voice cast. Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o voices the robot Roz. She’s joined by Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Pedro Pascal as fox Fink; Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara as opossum Pinktail; Oscar nominee Bill Nighy as goose Longneck; Kit Connor as gosling Brightbill and Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu as Vontra, a robot that will intersect with Roz’s life on the island. The film also features the voices of Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames.
The Wild Robot comes from writer/director Chris Sanders. Sanders, a three-time Oscar nominee, previously served as writer/director of DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch.
Brown’s illustrated middle-grade novel The Wild Robot originally published in 2016. Since then, it jumped to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. The success inspired additional books in the series, including The Wild Robot Escapes and The Wild Robot Protects.
The Wild Robot will premiere in theaters September 20. Until then, check back to THS for more updates.
