James Gunn’s incarnation of Superman has an ever-evolving cast of actors and actressess added to it all the time, and now, it seems that Wendell Pierce is now on that list. Even better: he will be playing Perry White in this upcoming latest addition to the Superman films. Who is this actor, you might ask? Who is this character he will be playing, you might ask if you’re not familiar with Superman canon? Well, let’s find out together, shall we?
Wendell Pierce as Perry White: Details
The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that James Gunn’s Superman has just snagged American actor and businessman Wendell Edward Pierce for the cast. Which is rather odd, because Wendell Pierce is not known for playing in superhero films. The closest he has ever come is playing James Greer in the streaming series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (2018–2023) for Amazon Prime Video. Otherwise, Pierce is far more well-known for playing in dramas like Ben Thomas in Malcolm X, Antoine Batiste in Treme (2010–2013), and Robert Zane in Suits (2013–2019).
All that might mean something dramatic is in store for James Gunn’s Superman. Which is all the more surprising because of who Wendell Pierce will be playing: Perry White. Fans familiar with Superman canon will recall that he was Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s editor-in-chief at the Daily Planet. Basically: he’s Superman’s boss. A tough but fair boss to boot, if his canon depictions are any indication. It sounds quite a fitting role for Pierce to play in that regard. We’ll just have to hope that he steps up to it when we eventually see this upcoming Superman film.
Fortunately, we know that James Gunn’s Superman has a theatrical debut date of July 11, 2025; according to Warner Bros.. Now we just have to wait for that date to come around.
Tune back in to THS to find out more about James Gunn’s vision of Superman when we do.
