It looks like Jennifer Lopez has a hot property on her hands. According to reports, there is a big bidding war taking place for Mattel’s animated take of Bob the Builder with significant interest from Netflix, Amazon MGM Studios, and DreamWorks Animation, among others.
Per Deadline, Jennifer Lopez‘s Nuyorican Productions is producing with ShadowMachine, the latter of which was also behind Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Also listed as a producer is In The Heights star, Anthony Ramos, who will also be voicing the titular character.
It was actually Ramos’ idea to deliver a Bob the Builder set in Puerto Rico because it represents the resilience of the Latino culture. This is also why so many interested buyers are circling the project because they believe it will speak greatly to the Latino and Hispanic communities.
Per the synopsis for the new Bob The Builder, “Roberto aka Bob (Ramos) travels to Puerto Rico for a major construction job, takes on issues affecting the island, and digs deeper into what it means to build. Bob’s journey celebrates the vibrant and colorful textures of the Caribbean Latin nations and their people.”
Bob The Builder began its life as a British animated children’s television series that was created by Keith Chapman for HIT Entertainment and Hot Animation. The show followed Bob, a general contractor, specializing in masonry, along with his colleague Wendy, various neighbors, and friends. The British proprietors of Bob The Builder eventually sold the enterprise in 2011 to Mattel for $680 million.
