By now, Nintendo Switch owners will be fully aware of just how old the console is getting. It’s not just that the hybrid handheld/home video game console saw its debut on March 3, 2017; thereby making it nearly 7 years old as of this writing. Gamers who’ve played some of Nintendo’s more recent games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Fire Emblem: Three Houses will remember just how the aging console struggles with running them, especially when it involves loading times.
It’s why any news about the planned successor to the Nintendo Switch catches the eyes of gamers. Even when it’s just rumors about something as simple as backwards compatibility.
Nintendo Switch 2: Backwards Compatibility Rumor Details
Wccftech has just reported on some interesting rumors about the upcoming successor to the Nintendo Switch, which we will tentatively call the Nintendo Switch 2 for the time being. According to them: a Portuguese news outlet called Universo Nintendo (with their own journalist ‘Necro’ Felipe Lima’ as the writer) has just reported on some interesting rumors made by a Nintendo content creator and games journalist called PH Brazil. PH Brazil has been a dependable source of gaming news for quite a while. Thus, even rumors from him carry quite a bit of weight to them.
According to PH Brazil: “the Nintendo Switch 2 will be compatible with current Switch cartridges as well as the digital library. Not only that but the feature is also said to have been made available to developers. This would, in turn, allow for enhancements of Switch games on Nintendo’s upcoming new hardware”.
Even better: known insider ‘NateTheHate’ backed up the rumors on the ResetEra forums. They not only confirmed the backwards compatibility feature for the Nintendo Switch 2, but they also added that testing for it has already begun. Granted, the only thing they don’t know is what PH Brazil meant by “enhancements”. Specifically: what form these enhancements will take for old Nintendo Switch games playing on this successor console? That’s still apparently in the works.
Alas though, I remind readers that these are still but rumors for now. We’ll just have to wait for Nintendo to clarify these rumors if they ever do. Tune back into THS to find out more about the Nintendo Switch 2 when we do.
