It went down to the wire between two candidates in Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly, but Alcock has been chosen as the newest Supergirl for DC Films. The House of the Dragon actress screentested for the role last week for James Gunn and Peter Safran. It’s unclear exactly when she’ll be making her first appearance for the DC faithful, but it could be in the upcoming Superman: Legacy, which starts filming this Spring.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is still searching for a director, but that could start filming this Fall. The comic book movie is partially inspired by the Tom King run of comics from 2021 to 2022. Supergirl is a key character in the upcoming DC Studios slate. Warner Bros. Discovery hired Gunn and Safran to take the reins over their film and TV slate in late 2022.
“Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton, She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.”
James Gunn on Supergirl
Ana Noguiera is writing the screenplay for the film, but it’s still without a director. Superman will be portrayed by David Corenswet alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane in the upcoming Superman film. Previous versions of Supergirl appeared in The Flash, a 1984 film starring Faye Dunaway, and the CW TV series that aired from 2015-2021.
The film is part of Chapter 1 in DC’s slate from Gunn and Safran. The slate also includes the Batman feature The Brave and the Bold and a TV series starring Viola Davis as her Suicide Squad character Amanda Waller.
