Some of us were first introduced to G.I. Joe and Cobra in the 80s. For four seasons we watch as G.I. Joe and Cobra battled it out week after week. While it was good to see the good guys always win, you couldn’t help but want to know more about Cobra and how Cobra Commander came to power. Well, thanks to the creative team of Joshua Williamson, Andrea Milanam, Annalisa Leoni, and Russ Wooton; we now get that story in a five hiss-ue Cobra Commander comic book series starting with issue #1 that is available this Wednesday at most local comic shops. Thanks to Image Comics I was able to take a look at this first issue to share my share my thoughts with you below.

Cobra Commander Will Transform Your Thoughts About The Rise Cobra [Non-Spoiler Review]

Cobra Commander #1

The COBRA Threat begins HERE. In a world where Cobra doesn’t exist, one man’s sinister plans to utilize the mysterious alien substance known as Energon will send shockwaves across the globe. Who is Cobra Commander? Where does he come from? And what horrors is he planning to unleash that will rock the world – and maybe the universe – to its core?

Cobra Commander #1 – The Story

COBRA COMMANDER #1 is the next story in the growing Energon Universe. Coming after DUKE #1 this story focuses on the origins of Cobra Commander. This story gives you a lot in just a little time. We start in the present time where a man in a hat walks into a bar to look for a vehicle. Then things heat up fast and after some blood spill, the man with the hat is on his way. That’s when the comic takes a different turn, goes back in time, and becomes an origin story. During this flashback, we learn more about where Cobra Commander came from and how he started his rise to power. Also for those familiar are not familiar with the Energon Universe we also get a surprise that will transform your thoughts on this story. Now this is all I am going to get into about the story because if you have read any of my reviews in the past you know I am not a fan of giving out spoilers.

The Creative Team

I feel that the creative team of Joshua Williamson (Writer), Andrea Milanam (Artist), Annalisa Leoni (Colorist), and Russ Wooton (Letterer) did a great job in telling the story of Cobra Commander. Williamson took a simple approach to his storing telling by not overloading us with details. You could see this by pages without any words where just the art told the story. Milanam and Leoni also did a great job with the art and colors. The overall look of this comic just screamed villain origin story. The colors were gritty and just gave a dark feeling throughout the whole story. Then we have the lettering from Wooton. This was done perfectly panel by panel. The word bubbles never took away from the art or the story, and the lettering for the sound effects blended in with the story so well that you were excited to see the next panel.

My Final thoughts

COBRA COMMANDER #1 is a must-read for any G.I. Joe fan. It is great that we are getting a look at what makes Cobra Commander tick and how he started his rise to power. I also love how this all fits into the Energon Universe (you will see what I mean). The story was entertaining the whole way through. The art, colors, and lettering were on point and helped tie everything together. The only issue I had with this story was some of the time in Cobra-La. There I was lost for a couple of panels trying to figure out what was going on but that corrected itself very quickly and did not take away from the story. Do yourself a favor and pick this comic up today. COBRA COMMANDER #1 is the rise of Cobra origin story we didn’t know we needed!
