Mean Girls easily took the weekend box office and mildly surpassed projections.
Mean Girls Slayed At The Box Office
As per Box Office Mojo, the movie was number one with $28 Million. Mean Girls was initially projected to earn around $20-$40 million; with the studio hoping for a sizable number of walk-in theatre-goers. That certainly seemed to account for a large part of the movie’s success. However, the movie will also earn another $4 Million over Martin Luther King Day. This brings its total to $32 million.
Paramount must be happy with its decision to put the $36 million movie in theatres rather than its original home on Paramont+. The movie will make back its budget, and will likely make more in the days and weeks to come.
The Rest Of The Box Office
The Beekeeper was second place at the box office with $16.8 Million. This week’s other new release, The Book Of Clarence, was in ninth place with $3.1 Million.
Wonka was in third with $8.4 Million. Anyone But You was fourth with $6.9 Million and Migration was in fifth place with $6.2 Million. Both Wonka and Migration are being phased out of theatres, but Anyone But You continues to be a sleeper hit for Sony.
Next Weekend’s New Movie
Next weekend’s major release is I.S.S. The movie comes from a distributor that doesn’t put a lot of money into marketing; and as such, the movie is not expected to make a huge dent in the box office. It’s projected to make only $2-$7 Million.
Couple this with next weekend being the NFL playoffs, and the entire box office will likely see a slower weekend. The box office will likely look more or less the same as it did this week.
As always we’ll find out next week!
