Paramount is looking to take flight with Tom Cruise in Top Gun 3 once again. The third film in the series was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter and first reported by Puck News. According to their sources, Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger is back to write the script and director Joseph Kosinski is also on board to direct. The intent is to reunite the three main stars of the film, Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell.
This news comes days after Cruise signed a deal with Warner Bros. to star in and produce movies, but that binding is nonexclusive. Cruise’s recent films have all been with Paramount, even though he didn’t have a deal with them like the Warner deal. For those thinking that this is some sort of response to that deal, the movie and this news has been in the works far before Cruise signed the deal with WB.
As for a release window or any other details like that, it’s unknown when or what they’ll be filming for a Top Gun 3. Cruise is going to be busy for at least the next calendar year and a half filming and promoting Mission: Impossible 8, which is no longer known as Dead Reckoning Part Two. That movie has a May 2025 release date. It did take a few years of development for Top Gun: Maverick to get off the ground as well, so we might be waiting for a bit for the film.
One thing is certain though, Tom Cruise is one of, if not, the most bankable movie star on the planet right now. Top Gun: Maverick hauled in an astronomical amount of money at the box office in 2022, raking in $1.5 billion globally.
As for his Warner Bros. deal, anything can come out of that picture deal. Some are hoping for Edge of Tomorrow 2. We’ll have to see where Cruise goes with his next couple of films.
