Smile 2 is getting one of its original stars to return for the sequel. The 2022 original, starring Sosie Bacon, Kal Penn, and Jessie T. Usher, directed by Parker Finn, exceeded expectations both critically and commercially. Adapted from Finn‘s own short film Laura Hasn’t Slept, Smile was a massive box office success and grossed over $217.4 million worldwide on a low budget of $17 million.
The Wrap now reports that Kyle Gallner, who portrayed Rose’s ex-boyfriend Joel, a police detective, in the original film; will reprise his role in the sequel. He will also be joined by The Staircase‘s Rosemarie DeWitt, who has also confirmed her involvement alongside Gallner, making him the only star from the original film to return for the sequel.
