DC is in the full swing of things for their upcoming new slate of films with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm. Now, for Supergirl, they’re bringing in actresses for screen tests. According to Deadline, Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, and Meg Donnelly are the frontrunners. They also mention how they very well could make a straight offer to a bigger movie star for the role, but for now, they’re going the route of screen tests.
Also according to their sources, James Gunn is very much part of the process, because the character might make a cameo in a future DC project that isn’t Supergirl. They’re also searching for the perfect director, but want to lock the actress down first because she’ll appear in a non-Supergirl project first.
As for the actresses, Milly Alcock first made a name for herself in the series House of the Dragon as Princess Rhaenyra Targeryen, which is heading into its second season this summer. Emilia Jones has appeared in CODA and Locke & Key. Finally, Donnelly is the star of Disney’s Zombies franchise. She’s already the voice of Supergirl in several DC animated movies. So that might make her a bit of a frontrunner for the role.
Are We Getting A Supergirl Movie? What About Superman?
The movie Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow was announced almost a year ago today; when DC and Gunn/Safran made a big presentation to press for their film/TV slate. The movie is based on the Tom King comic book series from 2022. Here’s what Gunn had to say about it at the time:
“In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re use to seeing.”
Superman: Legacy films this spring in Georgia and stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent. In addition, it features Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced, and Nathan Fillion.
Superman: Legacy will release in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
