There’s a reason why Our Flag Means Death was one of the most popular shows on HBO Max. You know, despite the fact that virtually no one has heard of it? And yet amazingly, despite that virtually nonexistent promotion and marketing, critics and audiences alike loved this period romcom pirate (yes, you read that right) show when it first premiered on March 3, 2022. On Rotten Tomatoes alone, critics gave this show 93% over 45 reviews. Audiences were even more generous than that by giving it 94% over 1000+ ratings. No matter how you look at it, it’s a huge success for HBO Max. So much so that they approved a season 2 for it back on October 5, 2023. Yet seemingly in spite of the success of both season, HBO Max has apparently decided that 2 seasons is enough.

Our Flag Means Death: Cancellation Details

Alas, it seems this will be the end of our merry band of gay pirates.

Deadline has just reported that HBO Max will be cancelling Our Flag Means Death at season 2. There will be no season 3 of this period pirate romcom. No conclusion to the love story between Stede Bonnet (played by Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (played by Taika Waititi). Only salty tears will be left in their wake.

Fortunately, there is a ray of hope for Our Flag Means Death, however faint it is. Deadline is clarifying that both seasons of the show will remain on HBO Max. It seems that the streaming service has no existing plans to remove this show from streaming…yet. We can only hope this remains the case, and that Warner Bros. Discovery doesn’t alter the deal at some point in the future.

A pity. This seemed like a hilarious band of pirates.
