Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom also lost its footing at the box office very quickly. However, Wonka has found success at the box office.

The New Year’s Weekend Box Office

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

As per Box Office Mojo, Wonka gained the number-one spot after going to second place last week. The movie garnered $24 million this week. To date, the movie has earned $142 million domestically and $387 million in total across all markets.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was in second place with $19.5 million. And while it has made back its $205 million budget, there are marketing costs that aren’t reported that factor in as well. It’s likely to still be a massive disappointment for Warner Bros. Discovery. The movie has thus far only made $84 million domestically, let alone get close to the $335 million domestic total of its predecessor. The movie unfortunately caps the year with WBD’s fourth consecutive superhero flop; The Flash, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Blue Beetle have also failed to meet their respective box office targets.

Migration was in third place with $17.2 million; the movie has spent three weeks in the global markets and finally has passed the $100 million mark worldwide with $105 million.

The Color Purple was in fourth, bringing in $13 million. Anyone But You rounded out the box office top 5 with $9 million

Next Weekend’s Projections

Night Swim

The major release this coming weekend is Night Swim. The movie was being promoted heavily in front of another Blumhouse movie, Five Nights At Freddy’s. While that doesn’t guarantee success, it does give some optimism that the movie will debut on the higher end of its $17-$25 million projected opening. However, Universal can be hit-or-miss with some of its releases, and it’s incredibly hard to know for sure with them how a release will land. Still, as the lone horror movie at the box office, it looks like it could easily secure the first-place spot.

As always we’ll find out next week!
