While Wonka slightly underperformed against projected numbers, it was still Number One at the weekend box office.

Serving Up Sweets At The Box Office

Wonka

As per Box Office Mojo, Wonka was projected to bring in $40 Million in pre-sales tickets at the box office, and then there’s also the factor of walk-ins, people who don’t pre-purchase their tickets but buy them on the day. While they factor into projected numbers somewhat, whenever a movie exceeds projected numbers, it’s because of a large number of walk-ins. Wonka was projected to make $40 million and only made $39 million. So slightly under its projected amount. This would indicate that the walk-in sales for this weren’t as strong as they could’ve or should’ve been. Still, it was enough to place the film in first place.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes kept its second place with $5.8 Million. The film has had some fluctuating success at the box office but in total has earned $289 Million. The film cost $100 Million to make, not including marketing costs. Making it barely a success for the studio, but it may still warrant enough for them to greenlit a sequel.

The Boy and the Heron dropped from first to third but brought in $5.2 Million. Godzilla Minus One dropped from third place to fourth-place spot from last week, bringing in $4.9 Million. Trolls Band Together dropped one placing to the fifth place spot with $4 Million.

Holiday Contenders Arrive For The Top Spot

This Friday sees the release of a few new movies. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrives in theatres, as does Migration, Anyone but You, and The Iron Claw.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is projected to bring in $32-$42 million next weekend. Migration is projected to bring in $25 million. Both Anyone But You and The Iron Claw don’t have projections. However Sony did release Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody last year to some mild success, so they could find repeated success with Anyone But You. It will likely place third, with Aquaman placing first and Migration placing second.

As always, we’ll tune in next week to find out.
