Universal is bringing back at least one of their classic monsters to movie screens in 2024. It was announced that a new take on The Wolf Man is coming in October 2024 from director Leigh Whannel. In addition, the long-gestating film that was supposed to star Ryan Gosling; will now star Christopher Abbott in the titular role. Gosling will still be involved with the project as an Executive Producer. The film hits theaters on October 25th, 2024.

The writers for the film include Whannell, Corbett Tuck, Lauren Schuker Blum, and Rebecca Angelo. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse Production. Whannell previously directed The Invisible Man for Universal and Blumhouse; which was one of the last films released before the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic shut down theaters. The synopsis for Wolf Man is simple. It’s about Christopher Abbott’s character whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Abbott has made a name for himself in movies like Possessor and Poor Things. This would be the highest-profile film of his career so far.

Universal has tried to get their Monsters off the ground in recent years. The so-called Dark Universe didn’t pan out after the first film, The Mummy, didn’t perform well at the box office. Other films like Renfield or The Last Voyage Of The Demeter didn’t reach expectations for Universal either. It seems like Universal is moving towards a less conventional approach with their classic monsters. We’ll have to see if the strategy works out at the box office.
