It’s here world and we’re just living in it! Barbie continued its awards season dominance as the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards graced the film with a staggering 18 nominations.
Barbie showed up in several major categories including Best Picture, Best Director (Greta Gerwig), Best Screenplay (Gerwig and Noah Baumbach), and a total of five acting nominations, with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling receiving two each, and American Ferrera also receiving a Best Supporting Actress nod.
While Barbie outdanced these other two films, Oppenheimer and Poor Things also had a great showing with 13 nominations each. Both films will compete for Best Picture while both projects also received significant acting nods. Cillian Murphy is present in the Best Actor category for Oppenheimer while Emma Stone represents Poor Things in the Best Actress category.
Other Best Picture nominees include Killers of the Flower Moon, American Fiction, The Color Purple, The Holdovers, Maestro, Past Lives, and Saltburn. After being snubbed by the Golden Globes, The Color Purple reasserts itself with a Best Picture nod from the critics while Saltburn is a bit of a surprise inclusion due to how divisive the film has been.
In a bit of a surprise move, the Critics Choice Awards did not acknowledge Anatomy of A Fall or The Zone of Interest in the Best Picture category. They’re both vying for Golden Globes in the Best Picture Drama and Foreign Film categories but the CCA relegated them to just the Foreign Language field.
The 29th annual Critics Choice Awards will air live on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024, on The CW from 7-10 PM ET with Chelsea Handler returning for the second consecutive year to host the ceremony.
