Unsurprisingly, Beyoncé took the number one spot this weekend.
Queen Bee Of The Song Charts And The Box Office
As per Box Office Mojo, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé was expected to do well at an otherwise slow box office, tracking for $20 Million. It made $21 Million domestically. This is a bit surprising in that the tracking is generally for pre-sales, and you expect there to be a bit more in walk-ins. Still, it got to the number one spot. So that has to count for something.
Every Other Movie Saw Significant Losses
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes dropped nearly 50% from last week to second place. The movie saw an uptake last weekend but this weekend couldn’t maintain that momentum.
Godzilla Minus One debuted to $11 Million in third place. Trolls Band Together maintained its spot in the fourth place spot. Wish dropped from third place to fifth.
Napoleon, which was second place last week, dropped 62% to the sixth place spot.
While Silent Night was tracking for a $4 to $9 Million opening. It ultimately debuted to $3 Million in the 9th place spot.
The Marvels continued to struggle and dropped 60% to the 11th place spot. Disney and Marvel have begun pulling the movie from theatres and will no longer report box office grosses for the movie. This is standard practice for any movie winding down at the box office but The Marvels has been in theatres for less than a month. For context, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was reported on for 98 days (so just over three months) after it was in theatres; and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had its box office numbers posted for 119 days (so nearly four months).
It would seem that Marvel is cutting its theatrical losses with The Marvels and will hope that a Disney+ release brings it some further success.
How Will Poor Things Perform At The Box Office
Poor Things is the major release next week. It will be in limited release and there is no tracking available for the movie. So this leaves us with a lot of question marks regarding its potential box office success. However, Yorgos Lanthimos movies tend to see a slow theatrical release. So it likely won’t make much but Fox Searchlight ramps up the theatre count we could see it start to see a growth in its numbers. Still, I wouldn’t expect it to make any sort of impact next weekend.
If anything, we’ll likely see a similar weekend to this one with Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé staying in the number one spot.
As always we’ll tune in next week to find out!
