Akira Toriyama (Dr. Slump, Dragon Ball, Jaco the Galactic Patrolman) decided to try his hand at a post-apocalyptic story with Sand Land back in May 9, 2000. This particular story ended up being only a single tankōbon volume long. Thus, you can see why this manga was one of Toriyama’s lesser-known works. Also thus, you can understand why it only received an anime adaptation in the form of an anime film just back in August 18, 2023. Despite that though, it seems to be a very popular anime film. So popular, in fact, that it’s soon going to be a full anime series, but only for Hulu.
Sand Land: Anime Details
Hulu is proud to announce that Akira Toriyama’s Sand Land will get an original net animation (ONA) adaptation sijmply titled Sand Man: The Series. This will essentially be the full anime version of the 2023 anime film. In fact, Hulu describes this upcoming anime as a “reimagining and expansion of the universe” Toriyama created.
However, unlike most other anime series, Sand Land: The Series will not be the work of a single animation studio. Instead, this anime will be a collaboration between 3 different studios: Sunrise (Mobile Suit Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Love Live!), Kamikaze Douga (Star Wars: Visions, POPTEPIC, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure title sequence), and ANIMA. The last studio in particular specializes in “high-quality 3DCG animation”, which indicates that we’re likely going to see some hopefully good CGI in this anime.
As for when we’ll get to see this anime? Well, Hulu reveals that Sand Land: The Series will make its debut sometime in Spring 2024. They don’t get any more specific than that for now, so tune in later for those details. As you might expect though, this will be a Hulu exclusive. Thus, you will need a paid subscription to watch this anime when it eventually streams there.
Bonus: Anime NYC Details
That’s not all, folks! Hulu also announces that on November 17, 2023 they will have an Animayhem booth at the Anime NYC convention. They will be celebrating not only their existing popular anime like Undead Unluck, Tokyo Revengers, and Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War; but also Sand Land: The Series. Plus, they’ll also have “unique photo opportunities” and giveaways that includes as prizes “a keychain, Animayhem poster, and Hulu green boba tea”. If you plan to attend the convention, then this might be a booth worth checking out.
