Spy x Family season 2 is another multi-part episode in the form of Ep. 4 “The Pastry of Knowledge / The Informant’s Great Romance Plan II”. As you can guess from the titles, both parts are more slice-of-life comedy stories. The former features Anya and her school friends, while the latter features Franky and his neverending, quixotic quest to find love. They’re both nice bits of fluff to prepare us for the upcoming drama and action in the next episode, if the end of this episode and the preview are anything to go on.

However, this is the spoiler-free version of my usual reviews. Thus, you all will get the official synopsis from Crunchyroll instead. You can check that out below:

Spy x Family Season 2 Ep. 4 “The Pastry Of Knowledge / The Informant’s Great Romance Plan II”: The Good
As with the previous episode, Spy x Family season 2 Ep. 4 “The Pastry of Knowledge / The Informant’s Great Romance Plan II” is a multi-part episode. Unlike the previous episode though, there’s no dark and dramatic spy thriller going on in this episode. Both parts of Ep. 4 are equally as fluffy and as silly as each other. It’s just a matter of what kind of silly fluff you prefer. This is not negative critique on my part, to be clear. On the contrary, I’m a huge fan of well-written hilarious fluff like this. It’s something nice and relaxing to watch after a long, difficult day.
And yet in spite of all that silly fluff that seemingly has no relevance, there is a peculiar detail that gets attention in Spy x Family season 2 Ep. 4 “The Pastry of Knowledge / The Informant’s Great Romance Plan II”. Specifically: it’s a detail about Anya. Without context: it’s revealed in the episode that she seems to know ancient languages. Is this foreshadowing about her backstory? Tatsuya Endo has thus far kept much of Anya’s backstory a complete mystery. Thus, this might very well be a clue about that mysterious backstory. Or it could be entirely possible that it’s a red herring. We won’t know for sure until Endo-sensei chooses to give us that info in the manga later…much later.
Spy x Family Season 2 Ep. 4 “The Pastry Of Knowledge / The Informant’s Great Romance Plan II”: The Bad
Honestly, the only bad thing about Spy x Family season 2 Ep. 4 “The Pastry of Knowledge / The Informant’s Great Romance Plan II” is that it has virtually no drama or espionage work. It’s just silly fluff in both parts. If you don’t like silly fluff though, then why are you watching this anime up to season 2 anyways?
