Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto has signed on to direct The Wrecking Crew at MGM, The Wrap has exclusively reported.
The buddy comedy was originally brainstormed by Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa as a project for the pair to star in together. The actors sold the pitch to MGM following a four-bidder battle in the fall 2021. Although they have yet to officially sign on, the pair were eyeing up contracts before the recent strikes shut down Hollywood.
This film will see Momoa and Bautista reunited after both appearing in the 2021 movie Dune. They also appeared in season 2 of the Apple TV+ show See, where the duo played brothers.
The Wrecking Crew was written by The Adam Project’s Jonathan Topper prior to the WGA strike. The plot is currently being kept under wraps, but it has been described as a buddy action comedy.
Soto is currently in demand in Hollywood. He is also set to co-write and direct a Transformer spin-off for Paramount Pictures.
Soto started his career in the industry as a TV producer. He made his feature directorial debut with La Granga (The Farm), which shed light on the tough realities of living in Puerto Rico. His follow-up Charm City Kings won a special jury award when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Despite having the lowest DC opening of the year, Blue Beetle has become a hit with fans and critics. Soto has shared his hopes that the film will get a sequel in the future.
