Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime in Japan) is certainly one of the more interesting anime films to come out of Studio Ghibli. Why, you might ask? Well, for one thing, it’s a lot bloodier than the usual Studio Ghibli fare. I mean it. You literally see people’s limbs and the occasional head go flying off in spectacularly bloody fashion. Heck, you can even see on the theatrical release poster that the titular princess has blood splattered all over her mouth, giving her an almost Joker-like visage. However, that is part of why it makes this anime film so unique compared to the others. Those adult themes give this anime film a depth to its story that not even masterpieces like Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away could reach.

If you didn’t see it in theaters when it made its NA premiere back on October 29, 1999; then you missed out on one heck of an animated ride. Fortunately, there is hope for everyone who missed Princess Mononoke in theaters, all thanks to Studio Ghibli Fest 2023. Don’t believe me? Then why not check out their trailer below, and see this epic historical fantasy for yourself?

Princess Mononoke: Studio Ghibli Fest 2023 Details

That creepy mask should tell you that San means business.

GKIDS is proud to reveal that Princess Mononoke will be joining the anime film lineup of Studio Ghibli Fest 2023 via that teaser trailer above on YouTube. The trailer gives us some of the best moments of this anime film without being too spoilery. After all, if you missed it in theaters back in 1999 and didn’t watch it on any home video releases afterward, then you’re in for a treat. Even better: this theatrical release will come with “exclusive selections” from the documentary series 10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki, just as a nice bonus.

Fortunately, you won’t have to wait long to watch it in theaters. The end of that trailer reveals that Princess Mononoke will make its theatrical re-debut on August 5-9, 2023 in both the original Japanese audio with English subtitles and the English dub. You can in fact purchase tickets for it either from the anime film’s official website or from Fathom Events.
