The tale of the Monkey King from the very famous 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West is a tale that has numerous versions around the globe. Why do you think we know him by a variety of names? From his original Sun Wukong to the more well-known Sun Goku thanks to anime, his tale seems popular. Now though, it looks like Netflix wants to add its own version of this tale to the ever-growing list of adaptations. Don’t believe me? Then why not check out their new official trailer for The Monkey King below, and see if this colorful adaptation appeals to you?
The Monkey King: Details
Netflix is proud to announce The Monkey King via that official trailer above on YouTube. Said trailer reveals that this animated film (starring Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley, Space Force, Love Hard) as the titular hero’s voice) will be heavily comedy-focused. There’s almost nothing else in this trailer besides comedy. Well, and some fantasy action too. Guess not everything can be comedic in this adaptation from director Anthony Stacchi (The Boxtrolls, Open Season), producer Peilin Chou (Over the Moon, Abominable), and executive producer Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer). Oh, and Reel FX (The Book of Life) is the animation studio behind this film.
Not only that, but the end of the trailer also gives us a release date. Apparently, The Monkey King still make its Netflix debut on August 18, 2023. Of course, you’re going to need to shell out cash for a paid Netflix subscription to watch it.
