Exoprimal likely reads like a game you’d imagine up in your mind as a kid. A squad of humans in mechanical suits called Exosuits battle different dinosaurs; while in a fight against an opposing team who’s also battling waves of dinosaurs.
If The Exosuit Fits
Each suit feels very Overwatch-esque; in its ability to make you feel completely different from the previous suit you’ve tried. You start the game off with a standard Soldier-esque suit but then very quickly you can play however you like. Prefer to play a melee tank build? Play as Murasame and mow down waves of enemies with a powerful blade. Prefer to blow everything up? Barrage has you covered. The amount of game-play variance in this game is staggering; undoubtedly you’ll be trying different Exosuits just to find one that’s right for you; even then you’ll likely have more than one favorite.
While the Exosuit selection process tends to be quite fun. There were also a few times; when no one on my team wanted to play a Support role or Tank role. Overwatch will give some bonus to those who fill those roles; and it’d be nice to see Exoprimal do something similar. Perhaps give a chest with some items or an XP boost to those who play a lesser sought role. It would balance out the teams and avoid big lopsided wins.
Outliving The Dinosaurs
The big question with any live service game like this is really; is it fun to play, and can you envision sticking with this game for a while?
I can happily say a resounding ‘Yes’ to both.
Exoprimal does a great job of giving you ways to customize your Exosuit; both with game-play enhancements but also cosmetics as well. Like Overwatch, there are a to of different cosmetic options to unlock; so that you can customize the Exosuit to your liking.
Rewards come at a somewhat inconsistent rate; there were a few times when I felt like I wasn’t earning much of anything. However, there were also parts where the rate of new cosmetics and other items felt very satisfying and exciting. It would be nice if it was a more consistent reward; rather than getting two high-rarity cosmetics followed up by an hour of unlocking emblems and banners for your profile.
There are some cut scenes that play throughout the game. As you play matches they’re meant to instill some story and plot into an otherwise strictly multiplayer game. Mostly these scenes lacked enough content to make it interesting; but some people will likely want to see more of the lore of the world expanded.
Conclusion
Considering this is launching as a live service game, arguably this is launching stronger than most similar titles. Most of my issues are fixable in patches. Even then, once you’re playing and killing Dinosaurs in the minute-to-minute game-play; there’s a lot to enjoy and you’ll likely not see these issues nearly as often.
You’ll likely find a lot to enjoy in this game, especially as they add more exciting content over time.
