With a SAG-AFTRA strike looming, Hollywood is scrambling to get promotional and casting material out. One movie that’s seen some major casting news recently is Superman: Legacy. The opening act of DC’s new era under James Gunn and Peter Safran saw David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan cast as Superman and Lois Lane. Yesterday we saw Hawkgirl, a Green Lantern, and Mister Terrific cast with Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi, respectively. Now, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Barry star Anthony Carrigan has joined the film as Metamorpho.
Apparently, these choices have been made for a while from James Gunn, but he wanted to get the casting of Superman and Lois Lane done before announcing anything. Superman: Legacy has a release date of July 11th, 2025, with Gunn expected to start filming early next year. A SAG-AFTRA strike could throw a wrench in that plan, but hopefully, the actors and writers both get fair deals from the studios.
Who Is Metamorpho?
Metamorpho made his first appearance in DC comis in 1965. Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon created him. He’s a man who can transmutate elements in his body into various forms, taking on those properties as powers. He was first an archaologist and then turned hero and became a detective. He’s a founding member of the superhero group, The Outsiders.
The character being a bit off the wall and underutilized fits right in with how Gunn has used other characters in films like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. Carrigan is coming off a star-making performance as NoHo Hank in Barr. He earned three Emmy nominations for his performance in the Supporting Actor in a Comedy category.
