If you’re unfamiliar, every week on The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs; former Monstervision host Joe Bob Briggs and his co-host Darcy The Mail Girl feature two movies that sometimes tie in together, or sometimes they don’t. This week was a double feature of animated horror movies with Mad God (2021) and Perfect Blue (1997).

Doing What Joe Bob Does Best At The Last Drive-In

The Last Drive-In Mad God

This week, the horror host was firing on all cylinders. Part of the appeal of The Last Drive-In is exploring different sub-genres of horror and finding new and exciting movies that challenge and expand your idea of what horror can be. This week the horror host brought a perfect example; as we got two great animated horror movies.

It also helped that they had a guest on The Last Drive-In! Phill Tippett directed Mad God and joined Joe Bob and Darcy to share insights into his career and his 30-year development cycle on Mad God. It’s always great to see Job Bob interviewing guests as he’s so great at it, but pair him with an incredibly interesting and talented individual like Phil, and you have incredibly magic segments that are as interesting as the movie itself.

Perfect Blue Is Perfectly Beautiful

While there was no guest for Perfect Blue. Although maybe you can count The Last Drive-In crew member Yuki Nakamura as a guest. Considering that Satoshi Kon passed away in 2010, having him on to discuss his work was impossible. In typical The Last Drive-In fashion; Joe Bob delivered a beautiful and eloquent speech on the filmmaker that was moving and respectful of a filmmaker well worth the respect.

Conclusion

This week at The Last Drive-In we got everything that makes the show as great as it is. A double feature of meaningful and interesting movies, a great interview, and beautifully poignant commentary. This is what makes the show great, and is easily one of the best episodes of the show.
