Five years ago, Netflix premiered Bird Box, a sci-fi thriller starring Sandra Bullock. It took the streaming platform by storm, amassing over 282 million hours viewed within the first 28 days of release. As of June 2023, it currently holds the title of Netflix’s #4 most-watched film of all time. (The top three include Red Notice, Don’t Look Up, and The Adam Project.)

Now, Netflix hopes to recapture the Bird Box craze with a new feature, Bird Box Barcelona. The film takes place in the same universe as the original film, but following different characters in a new location.

Here’s the official synopsis for the movie from Netflix:

From the producers of the global phenomenon, Bird Box, comes BIRD BOX BARCELONA, an expansion of the film that riveted audiences in 2018. After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows.

The movie stars Mario Casas, Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Diego Calva, Patrick Criado, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia. It comes from writer/directors Álex Pastor and David Pastor.

Bird Box Barcelona premieres on Netflix July 14.
