Over the weekend of June 17th, James Gunn held screen tests for various actors for Superman: Leagcy. The Hollywood Reporter reports they did tests with three pairs of actors: Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan, Tom Brittney and Phoebe Dynevor, and David Corenswet and Emma Mackey. The first day was the pairs acting as Clark Kent and Lois Lane. They were given several scenes to film and then Sunday saw the males take on the Superman costume. Interestingly enough, Emma Mackey was the only one to play Lois Lane opposite Superman.
Their sources caution that doesn’t mean that Mackey is the choice to play Lois Lane. Warner Bros. higher-ups and executives are meeting with Gunn to decide who the proper choices are. A choice could come this week or sometime soon from the cut of the screen tests from Gunn.
Once those two roles are picked, others will fall in line, like Lex Luthor and The Authority. Bill and Alexander Skarsgard have both been mentioned as choices for Luthor in addition to Hoult. Part of the story is Superman joining a world in which superheroes already exist.
Superman: Legacy currently has a release date of July 11th, 2025. The movie is the start of a new era for DC that ends with the release of The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and possibly Blue Beetle. The Flash fizzled at the box office amid middling to good reviews and bad CGI.
Superman: Legacy is the first in a new line of films from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership at DC Films.
