Secret Invasion is a new event series for Marvel on Disney+. It brings back the aliens known as the Skrulls, except this time, they’re not all trying to help humans. It’s up to Nick Fury to fix the whole situation, but he has no backup. There are no superheroes on call to come, swoop down, and help. Marvel held the Global Press Conference for Secret Invasion, and it featured Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Don Cheadle (James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes), Ben Mendelsohn (Talos), Olivia Colman (Sonya Falsworth), Emilia Clarke (G’Iah), Kingsley Ben-Adir (Gravik), Ali Selim (Director), Kevin Feige (Producer), Jonathan Schwartz (Producer). The moderator was Brandon Davis from ComicBook.com.
To start off, because this show is all about Nick Fury, we had to have something from Samuel L. Jackson. Other than saying more curse words than any other Marvel press conference combined, he had some insight into Nick Fury’s character at the start of the series.
This is my second appearance post-snap, and he’s been kinda gone for a while. He’s a little tired, a little vulnerable, but coming back to Earth because he’s been summoned. And we’ll see what happens. Got a bad knee now. Not so happy.
Heading over to Ben Mendelsohn, who previously played Talos in Captain Marvel, here’s what he had to say about coming back to the character.
But, we’re finding Talos in a difficult time. Like, you know, like, you’re not gonna get this spoiler out of me, so stop trying to give me that funny spoiler vibe thing. It’s a bad time, you know? It’s a bad time. And by the way, him, you know, up there? Like, coulda used him. Like, I’m just sayin’.
Cobie Smulders Screen-Test With Samuel L. Jackson On Avengers
Samuel L. Jackson mentioned how Cobie Smulders screen-tested for Maria Hill when they were casting for Avengers. Here’s what he had to say about her test.
We were actually talking last night about the fact that I remember meeting Cobie for the first time at the screen test. ‘Cause I screen tested with all the people that were trying to be Maria Hill. She killed it. You know, and I told her, I was like, “I knew she had this.”
Don Cheadle is making another appearance in Marvel as Rhodey, but his character is much different this time. Here’s what he had to say.
Yes. I think we’re just kind of finding out what’s happening with Rhodey as this series goes on. He’s in a different role. We see him as more a political animal than we have in the past. He’s been more of a military man, but now he’s sort of, you know, in some ways, a right hand of the president and this special envoy, in that regard. But I think what I’m looking forward to is just seeing more, you know, getting under the hood of who he is and seeing how this relationship, not only with Nick Fury, but the other cast members evolves.
Emilia Clarke On The MCU And What Inspired Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Villainous Turn
Emilia Clarke had high praise for all things MCU. She’s done Star Wars, Terminator, and Game of Thrones, so now it’s another nerd milestone for her. When asked about what drew her to the MCU, she had this to say.
All the people sitting right here. Like, literally. Who on Earth would ever not want to be sitting here with this? With these – With all of these incredible people? It’s like, even just a single one of these people on their own is enough. Altogether, it’s completely undeniable. So yeah, that’s why.
Kinglsey Ben-Adir went deep into what influenced his character of Gravik in the series.
Do you know what’s funny? I was thinking, when we spoke, it was just Sam and Ben who were sort of attached to the project, and Brian sent me a couple of taster scenes, which was the like a kind of showdown with me and Sam, and seeing that we have our [thinking?] episode free. And it was just a series called Zero, Zero, Zero, and there was a character called Manuel.
I kept seeing kind of weird parallels, because I knew the show was trying to be more grounded and kind of darker. And, yeah, I guess I took a lot of inspiration from that and how to — yeah, just how to make him as unsentimental as possible, I guess, in his hatred.
For these two, you know, like, there’s something about how much he hated Nick and how much he hated Gaia that was like, God, this feels really enticing.
Finally, here’s why Olivia Colman ended up joining the MCU with Secret Invasion.
After every Marvel film that’s landed in cinemas, I found my agent and said, “Please can I be in a Marvel?” And finally, either she got fed up with me calling her or it happened. So it wasn’t why Secret Invasion. Secret Invasion called. Any mention of the word Marvel and I went, “Yes, please.” So that’s why, and I had an absolute ball, and it lived up to everything that I was hoping for. Thank you.
You can watch Secret Invasion on Disney+ on June 21st.
