There’s no movies without writers. As the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike continues – and as the actors in SAG-AFTRA also consider striking – Hollywood faces serious delays to production. Today, Disney pushed back the release dates for some of their biggest upcoming films, including Marvel and Star Wars releases.
Delayed films and their new dates
- The new Alien movie moves to August 16, 2024.
- The Amateur with Rami Malek moves to November 8, 2024.
- Avatar 3 moves from December 20, 2024 to December 19, 2025. This also pushes Avatar 4 to December 2029 and Avatar 5 to December 2031.
- Blade moves from September 6, 2024 to February 14, 2025.
- Captain America: Brave New World moves from May 3, 2024 to July 26, 2024.
- Fantastic Four moves from February 14, 2025 to May 2, 2025.
- An unspecified Star Wars movie moves from December 19, 2025 to May 22, 2026.
- Thunderbolts moves from July 26, 2024 to December 20, 2024.
More schedule changes
Amidst the delays, two movies moved up their releases:
- Deadpool 3 moves up from November 8, 2024 to May 3, 2024.
- Live-action Moana moves up a week, from July 2, 2025 to June 27, 2025.
Disney also marks out the following release dates for unspecified films:
- Untitled Disney film – September 6, 2024
- Untitled Disney film – March 21, 2025
- Untitled Marvel film – July 25, 2025
- Untitled Disney film – August 8, 2025
- Untitled Marvel film – November 7, 2025
- Untitled Star Wars film – December 18, 2026
More delays likely ahead
So, this schedule outlines Disney’s current release plan. However, it’s not yet clear how long the WGA strike will remain in effect. And at this time, it seems likely SAG-AFTRA will also opt to strike. With both writers and actors on strike, expect these movies to end up kicked even further down the line. So if you want to see the next Marvel or Star Wars flick, pester the studios to pay up.
