She’s not quite right…but she’s getting there. Today, Searchlight Pictures offered up a closer look at the upcoming film Poor Things. Get ready for something strange and oddly charming.

From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

This trailer gives us more to work with than the film’s first teaser. If you’re familiar with Lanthimos’ previous work (like The Lobster and The Favourite), you know he traffics in the odd and unusual. This pattern certainly looks to continue with Poor Things, which brings a sort of period-piece steampunk sci-fi aesthetic to the screen. I don’t know about you, but I’m intrigued.

Lanthimos directs the film based on a screenplay by his Favourite collaborator Tony McNamara. McNamara also previously penned Disney’s live-action Cruella (also starring Stone) and the Hulu period comedy The Great.

Poor Things premieres in theaters September 8. Until then, check back to THS for more updates.
