Doctor Who just revealed another big star headed to the sci-fi series. Indira Varma will play a new character known as “The Duchess” in the show’s upcoming season.
Varma actually previously joined the Whoniverse in the spinoff series, Torchwood. However, as far as we know, her new role won’t have anything to do with her time on Torchwood. The spinoff series was overseen by Russell T. Davies, who will return as showrunner of Doctor Who for series 14.
Varma will play opposite Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor.
“I’m thrilled to be in Doctor Who and particularly excited to be crossing cosmic paths with Ncuti, as the Doctor, and look forward to creating interplanetary mischief with him,” said Varma. “I loved playing Suzie Costello for Russell T Davies in Torchwood so am thrilled to be entering this world again.”
Varma previously appeared in Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as in Game of Thrones as Ellaria Sand. She will soon star in Dune: The Sisterhood as Empress Natalya.
“I’m overjoyed to be reunited with Indira after our Torchwood days, and this part is truly spectacular! A whole new audience will be hiding behind the settee when the Duchess unleashes her terror,” said Davies.
Varma joins previously announced cast members for the new season of Doctor Who, including Drag Race champ Jinx Monsoon and Jonathan Groff.
Doctor Who returns this fall with a series of specials, led by former stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate. Expect Gatwa’s first season to premiere sometime after the three 60th anniversary specials.
