News about the sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat is heating up. Karl Urban is in final talks to star as Johnny Cage in the upcoming sequel. Simon McQuoid will return to direct a script from writer Jeremy Slater.
The first film was a brand new adaptation of the incredibly popular video game series that was much more in line with what fans wanted instead of the more kid-friendly versions in the 90s. That film remains one of the most watched debuts in the history of HBO Max.
The post-credits scene in that film teased the debut of Johnny Cage in the sequel. The cast for the first film included Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica MacNamee as Sonya Blade, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. Cage has been a central character in the Mortal Kombat series since the beginning in 1992. He’s an action movie star with an extensive action background. He’s often portrayed as larger than life, and places more on his image than anything else. He’s been voiced by The Miz in video games before, and The Miz was often talked about as a fan casting choice.
Mortal Kombat 2 will be produced by Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Broken Road Production’s Todd Garner, Simon McQuoid, and E. Bennett Walsh.
Urban is no stranger to genre or nerd movies and TV series. He’s currently starring in The Boys and has made appearances in Thor: Ragnarok, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Doom, and Star Trek.
