Star Wars: Visions 2 Review
Those that know me already knew I was not a huge fan of Star Wars: Visions. So when the opportunity came for me to watch the second season I said yes to see if there was anything that would make me change my mind about this series. While I am still not a huge fan of the second season there were a few things that really I did like. Now before I go any further don’t get me wrong, I am not calling this series bad, it is just not my cup of blue milk. So, without any more waiting here are my non-spoiler thoughts about Star Wars: Visions 2
The Stories
Star Wars: Visions 2 gives us 9 different animated shorts. Those shorts are Sith, Screecher’s Reach, In The Stars, I Am Your Mother, Journey to the Dark Head, The Spy Dancer, The Bandits of Golak, The Pit, and Aau’s Song. No just like the first season of Visions these non-canon stories give a different but somewhat familiar Star Wars look. Kind of like the Marvel What If…? series. Most of these sorts run for about 15 minutes and give us a very unique Star Wars storytelling experience.
These stories not only tell the struggles between the Rebellion and the Empire but also have strong messages with them as well. We will see struggles between family and friends, Keeping the faith when all hope is lost, and so much more. While some of these stories were fast-paced others really seem to drag on and were hard for me to watch. But other than that the storytelling was pretty strong. If I had to pick a couple of the favorite stories it would be Sith and The Bandits of Golak.
Visions 2 Animation
If you are a fan of different styles of animation then you will probably be a huge fan of Star Wars: Visions 2. These stories were created by the following international animation studios: El Guiri (Spain), Cartoon Saloon (Ireland), Punkrobot (Chile), Aardman (United Kingdom), Studio Mir (South Korea) Studio La Cachette (France), 88 Pictures (India), D’art Shtajio (Japan), and Triggerfish (South Africa). D’Art Shtajio’s short was created in collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd. (United States).
These studios did a great job of adding different animation styles from a variety of countries and cultures. From anime to computer animation you get a little bit of everything from these stories. Some stories are bright and full of color and others are dark and even look unfinished. But all these different forms of art make each story come to life in many ways.
My Final Thoughts
Overall Star Wars: Visions 2 isn’t bad. For those that like a different storytelling and animated approach, this series is for you. Some episodes, I was really able to get into them but others just moved too slowly and the animation was just distracting to me. Like some Star Wars stories, there were some really dark moments that kind of have a The Clone Wars vibe to them. Also, there were a lot of moments of hope and inspiration as well. While this series isn’t one I would watch over and over again it does have a lot of good moments. So, If you were not a fan of the first Visions installment give this one a chance; it does have some good moments you won’t want to miss out on.
