With the weekend Box Office now at a close, we have our results as per Box Office Mojo. As I predicted last week, The Super Mario Bros. Box Office has now passed $1 Billion at the Box Office. In an impressive feat, the movie achieved this in only 26 days, a short time frame for an animated film to make this much money. It is now the 10th-highest animated film to make over $1 Billion and the 10th highest-grossing animated film, surpassing Illumination’s own previous record holders, Despicable Me 2 and Minions: The Rise of Gru.
What We Thought Of Mario
In our review of The Super Mario Bros. movie, reviewer Hunter Bolding said:
There’s enough to love about The Super Mario Bros. Movie to overcome some of the faults. Nintendo fans have plenty of easter eggs, small details, and the entire Mushroom Kingdom to enjoy. For kids, this one will be perfect, and it’s entertaining enough for parents who have never played a Mario game to enjoy. It might not be a revolutionary movie, but it is exactly what you would expect out of a Super Mario Bros. movie.
The Runner Ups
Evil Dead Rise continues to claw its way into the Box Office, with it making $12 Million, placing it in the Number Two spot. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret debuted in 3rd place. In our review of the movie, reviewer Sarah Carey said:
When you hear that a Judy Blume book from the 1970s about young girls coming of age is getting a film adaptation, it’s hard to think about how it could possibly be relevant 60+ years later. I never read Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret growing up. So, I went into the film waiting to see why this book? Why now? Well, let me tell you right now, it’s absolutely stellar! Somehow it’s the perfect representation of girlhood while being a timeless story about generations of womanhood.
Of course, Universal and Illumination are likely facing the end of Mario’s monumental run as we head into the busy summer movie season, which arguably starts this week with the release of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3. In our review of the movie, reviewer Hunter Bolding said:
This is a film heavy with emotional beats that might be too much for some viewers, but it’s backed up with so much charm, love, and care for these characters. James Gunn doesn’t miss and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ends up as a triumphant entry in the series.
