The Menendez brothers were famously convicted in the 1990s for the murder of their parents. The brothers weren’t initially suspects in the murder, but months into the investigation things changed. Eventually, Erik and Lyle admitted to the killings, but claimed they were in self-defense after enduring years of abuse by their parents. Ultimately, the pair were found guilty and sentenced to life without parole; they currently remain incarcerated in California.
The announcement video for the Netflix series includes audio of the original 911 call. The Menendez Murders are often thought to have helped usher in the modern fascination with true crime. The Menendez Brothers have been the subjects of many different documentaries, podcasts, and various other forms of true crime media.
